No I'm not crazy. Yes, I have changed a diaper before. Yes, I know how disgusting it can be. And Yes, I have used cloth diapers before. *SIGH* Okay, so for those of you reading this and thinking that I am crazy and that this little idea of mind will only last until I have one big diaper blowout, I had to put that little beginning statement. I have embarked on a fun project these past few months. I have been sewing cloth diapers. I actually nannied for a family in Iowa that used cloth diapers. She has three little boys and at one time they were all in diapers. Cloth diapers. I thought it was a fantastic thing and the more I used the cloth diapers the more I was determined that when I had little ones I would use the same. Cloth diapers now-a-days are quite different than what many of you are used to seeing. A big square piece of cloth folded in a million ways and pined in the front with enormous safety pins. That's all in the past baby! These little critters I am making are quite amazing and I know, from experience, they work very well.
The outer layer is just a plain flannel. The inner layer that touches the babies skin is a super soft mico-fleece. Then sandwiched inside is a layer of water proof fabric called Polyurethane Laminate, or PUL. Then stitched into the center of the whole caboodle is a "super soaker" made up of two layers of extra-absorbent terry cloth with a piece of fleece inside of that. That makes the inside of this diaper six layers thick! Tough to get a sewing machine through sometimes, but I have managed so far Then the little tabs are velcro and are adjustable so they can be made to be larger or smaller. The legs and waist also have elastic in them so they will fit close to the baby to prevent leakage and give him a little wiggle room.
The safari print diaper is the first that I made. Don't look too close for it has a few flaws that I was to tired to pick out and redo. The rest of them I have made over the past couple months and I am actually getting pretty efficient at these little puppies. Today I pumped out 4 of them while watching Hairspray. Pretty cute little things. Most agree that they are really adorable but I can almost convince NO ONE that they actually work and are worth the money saved and the loads of laundry. I guess I'll have to see myself in three months when I actually have a newborn at my house.If anyone wants me to make them a little cloth diaper, I would be happy! Maybe if you try them you would be hooked and want to buy more. You never know right!

Those are sooo cute! You are actually selling me on these (although Colby isn't totally on board!) Do you have a pattern or did you freelance these? I am super impressed. Can't wait to see pictures of your little guy in these.
We use cloth diapers and I know people thing we are crazy but they are so much easier then everyone things. I love all the ones you have made they are so cute! When they are just nursing I think cloth is the only way to go b/c you have so few blow outs compared to disposable and they really do save you so much money especially if you are making them yourself, so you go girl! I can't wait to see pictures of this little guy.
I LOVE them! My sister uses them and swears they are the greatest thing ever! I, like Shauni, would love to see a pattern (I'm no master seamstress like you, but are they very difficult?). My biggest hangup with cloth diapers right now is that I don't have my own washing machine (and I haven't convinced Ryan that it's the best option), but I would love more info!!!

I do have a pattern for the diapers. It is actually a Kwik Sew Pattern that I got from Hancock fabrics. I found a bunch of patterns on line, but this pattern that I bought at Hancock is the most simple and a very good and sturdy pattern. If you have used Kwik Sew patterns before, you know that they are not the flimsy tissue paper patterns but are made on nice thick paper. The pattern has sizes xs-xl and it also has a diaper cover pattern along with a laundry hamper liner and other accesories for the green cloth diaper mom. It was a little pricey, but worth it! I think it was around $16.00.
Sara, it is hard to use these if you dont have your own washer and dryer, but you can hire diaper services to launder them for you. Even with that added cost, it still saves you money to use these little buggers. Plus the bonus environmental plusses!
I wish I was there in Iowa to share my new treasure with everyone. I miss you all SOOO much you have no idea. It might have a little to do with me being pregnant, but I am so sad not to be in Iowa right now. I cried to Bryce about it the other day. Anyway, call me if you want more info on the diapers! These look pretty cool. My kids get ragging diaper rashes and so I have thought of trying cloth ones but potty training Kimberli has sorta made me unsure. Let me know how it goes when your baby is born and I might try them on Katelyn.
